St. John’s Pride Inc. Chair Noah Davis-Power said on Sunday that this year’s week-long celebration had the biggest crowds in the event’s history.

“We’ve seen our community come out in our best colours yet,” Davis-Power said at the beginning of Sunday’s pride parade. “We hope, that [after] this pride week, we’re gonna keep going through the whole year.”

Hundreds showed up to participate in Sunday’s parade, decked out in vibrant outfits and shouting slogans such as “open up the closet door” and “don’t assume your kids are straight.” Others held signs declaring: “Some women have penises. Get over it,” or simply, “Be U.”

“[We¬†will] remember where we’ve come from as a community, where we are as a community, and where we have yet to go,” Davis-Power said in his speech.

This year’s pride celebrations began July 15 in St. John’s, where the rainbow flag and transgender pride flag were raised above city hall.
