Ecuador Blog Day 9: Volunteering in Shuid

Today was a slow day because a lot of people were sick. I caught a nasty cold but for the most part I’m feeling pretty good. The morning was spent bending rebar again but then after lunch, I dug part of a trench.

Today was a slow day because a lot of people were sick. I caught a nasty cold but for the most part I’m feeling pretty good. The morning was spent bending rebar again but then after lunch, I dug part of a trench. After energizing by listening to Hunter Hayes, Taylor Swift, and One Direction (we still are teenage girls…) we got super excited that we were actually building a school for the kids we met. It felt so good to know that in a year, possibly a few months, they will be learning in the school we were working on.

Tonight was one of the girls’ birthday! We threw Lauren a birthday party complete with cake, a piñata, and a lot of dancing to nothing at all. Carlos, the women who were on kitchen staff, and their kids joined us and boy, did they know how to party! I’ve never had so much fun at a birthday. It was such a simple way to celebrate, yet filled with so much energy and real friendship.
